The most common — and most expensive — mistake in Nigerian solar is wrong sizing. An oversized system ties up money you didn't need to spend; an undersized one trips off the moment the pumping machine starts. Here is the exact method our engineers use, simplified so you can do it at your dining table.
Step 1: List Your Appliances and Their Wattage
Walk through your home and write down everything you want solar to power, with its wattage (check the label or manual). A typical example:
- 10 LED bulbs × 10W = 100W
- 3 ceiling fans × 70W = 210W
- 1 LED TV = 100W
- 1 refrigerator = 200W (running)
- 1 freezer = 300W
- Laptops, phones, router = 150W
- 1 inverter AC (1HP) = 750W
Total running load ≈ 1,810W
Step 2: Size the Inverter
Your inverter's continuous rating should be at least 125% of your running load, to absorb motor start-up surges (fridges and pumps briefly draw 2–3× their running power).
1,810W × 1.25 ≈ 2,260W → the next standard size up is a 3.5kVA inverter. That extra headroom is what keeps the system stable when the compressor kicks in.
Step 3: Calculate Daily Energy Consumption
Multiply each appliance by the hours you actually use it. For the home above, a realistic figure is 10–12kWh per day if the AC runs through the night, or 6–7kWh without it.
Step 4: Size the Battery Bank
Decide how many hours of autonomy you need after sunset — for most Abuja homes that's 10–14 hours (evening to morning). If your overnight consumption is 5kWh:
- With lithium (LiFePO4) at 90% usable capacity: 5kWh ÷ 0.9 ≈ a 5–6kWh battery.
- With tubular batteries at 50% safe discharge: you'd need roughly double the nameplate capacity — one reason lithium wins on real cost per cycle.
Step 5: Size the Solar Array
Nigeria enjoys 4.5–6 peak sun hours daily. To generate 10kWh/day in Abuja (≈5 sun hours), you need roughly 10 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.8 (system losses) = 2.5kW of panels — about five 550W panels. We always add margin for harmattan haze and cloudy days.
